DECLARATION OF INDEFINITE STRIKE ACTION BY ATAG AND CCT-GH

FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
30/10/2018

ALL TEACHERS ALLIANCE GHANA (ATAG)

INDUSTRIAL SOLIDALITY: WE STAND RESOLUTE WITH COALITION OF CONCERNED TEACHERS-GHANA (CCT-GH). THE TEACHER IS THE REASON

We in the All Teachers Alliance Ghana (ATAG) had taking cognizance of the declaration of strike by CCT-GH on Thursday, 1st November, 2018.

We welcome the move and would like to urge all our members across the country to join in the industrial action to press home our demands.

There is absolute sense of reason in the issues raised by our sister union and we share in a similar sentiment.

Successive governments had taken teachers for granted and treated us as though we are outcast. Our condition of service is generally poor and had not seen any form of improvement since the inception of the single spine salary structure.

Government had deliberately accumulated arrears due innocent teachers and is using every ways and means to avoid payment. What is particularly lamentable is the conceit in which things are portrayed as though the government is addressing our issues. The recent hype in payment of salary arrears was just a mere rhetoric. Teachers who were owed eighteen months arrears ended up receiving barely one month and some far less. This is a palpable insult and a show of gross disrespect towards the Ghanaian teacher.

The GES SIC-Insurance policy was another indication of how teachers in Ghana had been underrated by our employers. They blatantly ignore teacher unions, and enter agreement with an insurance company without the consent of teachers as though we are still receiving training.

The turnaround is so shameful that teachers’ image in the society is still marred with such shameful treatment.

Any attempt to resist the system comes with show of authority and power: a clear sign of intolerance on the part of our employers.

The time has come for the scale to fall from our eyes. We strongly urge over 6000 of our members to brace themselves to bear their teeth to the government come Thursday by laying down their tools until the government listen to our cry.

We urge them not to be intimidated by the usual threat from entrenched directors, headmasters and supervisors who themselves want freedom from the system that cow them to average living and mean life.

We stand in solidarity with our colleagues in CCT-Ghana and commend them for the move.
